Carnatic vs. Hindustani music

As many of you know, I also teach South Indian classical music as well as western music. You might be wondering, why only South Indian music? What about North Indian music? There can’t be that big of a difference between the two—it’s the same country! But you’d be surprised how different the two styles actually are.

Carnatic - South Indian classical music

Gamaka - ornamentation or embellishment done on or between notes

Raga - collection of pitches, similar to a scale in Western music
